A positive team culture is one we all strive to achieve, but don't always know how. It's something effective leaders do well and developing leaders should strive for. And the good news is that it can start with any member on the team who is willing to commit to making a difference regardless of your career path. Here's a few easy ways to begin building a 'dream team' -
Create a process around recognition. Find a few creative ways for peer-to-peer or leadership recognition and do it consistently. For example, if you're a larger team, perhaps peers recognize for nominate weekly. If it's a smaller team, maybe the leader does a quarterly award. And bonus points if you give your award a creative name or token of appreciation!
Have fun, during work! Take some time on a regular cadence (weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, etc.) to play a game (ex. trivia, do a game show, guess that song, etc.). Not only is this a great way to build connections within the team, it can be an excellent mid-day refresher.
Get to know each other. Do a 'get to know you' series where your team members rotate sharing more about them through questions about their family, hobbies, culture, etc.. You'll be surprised by how much you learn and bond through this simple exercise.
Coffee chats. If you're on a larger team or find it hard to connect with all members within your team, try setting up a quick coffee chat to learn more about them. These work great both one-on-one or in smaller groups and can be a great way to build a positive team culture.
Put each other first. Allow all members of your team to be heard, celebrate the successes of your teammates, & value their family, health, and well-being over any amount of work. At the end of the day, we all want to work with people who respect and care for each other.
Not only do these strategies help you become a more effective leader and supports your personal development, but a valued company culture fosters a positive work environment, leads to employee engagement, higher performance, and leads to more effective problem solving. Team work makes the dream work and staying true to your core values will be a benefit to you and your coworkers.
