Am I Ready for a Promotion?

So you think you're ready for that big promotion or maybe your dream role just opened up and you're asking yourself, am I ready? The first step in truly knowing is by being honest with yourself about if you've taken the steps to get there, and we're here to help!

Take our self-assessment to see if you might be ready. For each question you are able to answer yes to (and be honest!), you can give yourself one point. After you've answered all of the questions, tally up your score, and read your results.

Give yourself one point for each question you're able to answer 'yes' to:

  • I have been in my current role for at least one year

  • I have taken on a special project or additional workload in the last 6 months outside of my day-to-day responsibilities. Bonus point if you asked for the project or workload as a way to show your readiness

  • I spend time with my leadership discussing my career development and have done so within the last 6 months

  • My supervisor or leadership has voiced they are happy with the work I am doing

  • My peers and partners value my contributions, and often give positive feedback

  • I am actively taking on work that's similar to the level of work I am applying for

  • I know what my career ambitions are and pursue them

  • I spend time networking outside of my direct team

  • I show more initiative at work than my peers and/or competition

  • I am a strong performer, consistently

  • I understand the expectations of this promotion and can see myself in this role for 1+ year from now

...drumroll, please!

If you scored 9 to 12, you're ready! You've been intentional about your development and the stars have aligned. It's your turn to shine. Nail that interview and this promotion has your name written all over it.

If you scored 6 to 8, you might have some room to go, but we don't want you to limit yourself either. Have a conversation with your current supervisor or mentor on if they think you're ready and go from there! Either way you're close enough and it's not if, but when, as long as you stay focused on what it is you need to do to get there.

If you scored 5 or below, it might be best to hit the pause button and spend more time preparing yourself for this moment. Rushing into something you're not ready for could backfire and have unwanted consequences, but that doesn't mean your time won't come. Jot down the questions you couldn't answer yes to and create a game plan for mastering them. You got this!
