Communication and Leadership

Updated: Jan 6, 2023

Communication is one of the most critical leadership skills and requires intentional practices to keep your team informed and engaged. However, communication can also be a time consuming act for you and your team, and with anything, there's a balance to how and when we communicate.

A few simple ways to keep your team informed -

  1. Send a 'top of mind' of updates, priorities, etc. via slack, email, etc.. Not all updates need to be a meeting, but quick notes can help keep your team up to date with need to know information. Do this once or twice a week, or even on a regular cadence (Tuesday AM, end of week, etc.)

  2. Do a daily standup. Standups have been a proven way to keep a team engaged and processing information more quickly. However, if you plan to go down this route, create a planful process and adapt as you go to ensure the time is a value for all those involved.

  3. Prepare for meetings! I can't stress this one enough. Your team is busy and so are you, but it's your responsibility to communicate to your reports. If you have a weekly staff or regular touch base, plan ahead to plug in all important updates into these settings. If you don't have updates or a planned agenda, give them the time back.
