Perfecting The Performance Review

Have you ever wondered how to get an all-star performance review? If not, it's a question worth asking as often top performers within a company receive more than just a gold-star. This coveted title may come with a higher salary increase, bonus potential, & more. Who doesn't love that, right? And believe it or not, it's more than just your performance at play.

...So how? Here's a few tips & tricks to prepare you to land a perfect score at the workplace:


  1. 'Know' who is in the room - the first step is to understand how performance evals take place at your workplace. Who is making the decision and how well do they know you, or you know them? Often it's a group of leaders or partners you've worked closely with, and possibly some you haven't worked with at all. Once you know who participates, get to know them (authentically, of course)! Schedule time to learn about their team, work, etc. or offer support on a special project, provide business perspective or share knowledge. Your end goal is that the person in the room, who has an active role in your rating, has something positive to say about you.

  2. Have a development plan - a career development plan is your own personal map to what you want to achieve in the workplace. It should be designed by you (for you) and should reflect your individual aspirations, and more importantly, how you plan to get there (develop of soft skills, hard skills, stretch projects, networking goals, etc.). The next step is to communicate your plan - share it with your boss, your bosses boss, your bosses bosses boss, etc.. Taking this initiative will show how intentional you are about your growth and set you apart from your peers.

  3. Do your job well, consistently - it goes without saying, but you do need to do your job well to get a good performance review, and consistency matters just as much! But remember, perception is reality sometimes - make sure your work is recognized by who you need to recognize it. And if it's not on its own, send an email or set up a quick meeting to share your accomplishments.


And 'poof!' - just like magic, you're standing out amongst your peers and top of the list for that perfect rating. You've got this!
